Ukko chases

  • Description
  • A shadow-drenched, almost wordless scene built on silhouette and implied motion rather than detail. In the foreground, rendered in heavy sepia and rust tones, a large hooded or robed figure lunges forward mid-stride, one clenched fist raised, body twisted with effort - unmistakably Ukko, Sláine's diminutive bardic sidekick, caught here in a rare moment of physical exertion rather than storytelling. Deep in the background, framed within a doorway of warm firelight, a tiny black silhouette - some other creature or figure - scurries or cowers, the actual target of the chase reduced to almost nothing against the glow. The lighting does all the narrative work: warm amber spilling from the doorway against the cold dark of the foreground figure's bulk, so the eye is pulled from Ukko's straining shoulders all the way back to the small, fleeing shape he's after. It's a loose, quick piece of storytelling art rather than a finished pin-up, closer to the kind of interior comic panel Bisley would have produced for Sláine's ongoing adventures in 2000 AD, where Ukko's tall tales ran as comic counterpoint to the main saga's mythic violence - Pat Mills' creation, forever exaggerating his own role in whatever chaos Sláine himself is actually causing. Here the joke is visual: an enormous amount of dramatic lunging energy aimed at what turns out to be a very small and unthreatening shadow.
