Lobo as a woman

  • Description
  • A punk-styled woman with a wall of wild dark hair and blood-red eyes screams in fury as a massive fist crashes toward her, her dialogue balloons spelling out A WOMAN! A FEMALE! A SHE! A BROAD!, followed by a defiant I'M A FRAGGIN' BROAD! She's dressed in Lobo-adjacent biker gear, an Iron Cross pendant, black leather, chain-wrapped forearm, and the whole page reads as a deliberate gender-flipped riff on Lobo's own attitude and vocabulary rather than a random original character. It's staged with the same in-your-face, panel-filling aggression Bisley brought to Lobo himself: a huge fist bursting in from off-panel, a scream rendered in jagged word balloons, dialogue built entirely out of macho posturing that the character is aggressively reclaiming. DC's Lobo universe leaned hard into parody almost from the moment Bisley redesigned the character with writers Alan Grant and Keith Giffen, mocking the testosterone-driven antihero archetype even while indulging in it, and clones, expies and gender-swapped riffs on Lobo became a recurring gag across the character's run through the 1990s. This page fits squarely into that tradition: a character built entirely out of aggressive machismo, then given a female face and voice as its own kind of punchline. Bisley's linework here is looser and more expressive than in his painted covers, favoring scratchy motion lines and blunt, comic-timing panel composition over rendered detail, which suits the material; a joke this broad works better fast and messy than polished and slow. Whether or not this particular character had a name and continuity of her own within the wider Lobo cast, the page captures exactly the register that made the franchise a hit: violence played for a laugh, machismo played as a punchline, drawn by the artist who built the whole aesthetic in the first place.
